History
Nestled at the foot of the St. Gotthard Pass, Airolo has long been the gateway to the Leventina valley and a crossroads between the northern and southern Alps. Destroyed by a major fire in 1877, the village was rebuilt and soon after became home to the northern portal of the Gotthard railway tunnel. Now a ski resort and starting point for the pass, it still carries the imprint of its history as an alpine transit town.
