History
Sitting at Switzerland's southernmost border, Chiasso grew up around its railway station, an international junction on the Gotthard line opened in 1882 and the obligatory crossing point between Switzerland and Italy. The town still carries the imprint of its customs and trading past, with rationalist buildings from the 1930s marking its center. The border, just steps from the town core, has always shaped its identity as a frontier town.
